Fenghuang Ancient Town
The 300-year-old river town of wooden stilt houses, stone bridges, and lantern-lit evenings — about 3.5 hours from Zhangjiajie. It is the most photogenic ancient town in China and the perfect cultural counterpoint to the nature-focused park days.
Is Fenghuang Worth the Detour?
Our honest answer: Fenghuang is spectacular, but it depends on how much time you have.

The 3.5-hour bus ride each way means Fenghuang consumes nearly a full day of travel. With a 5-day itinerary, this works — the cultural contrast resets your appreciation for the natural scenery when you return. Our 5-day itinerary includes Fenghuang on Days 4-5.

The parks deserve your full attention. Tianmen Mountain, the Glass Bridge, and the Forest Park core will fill 3-4 days comfortably. Fenghuang is not going anywhere — save it for your next China trip or combine it with a Guilin/Yangshuo route instead.
How to Get There from Zhangjiajie
Fenghuang has no train station and no airport. The bus is the only public transport option from Zhangjiajie.

Tickets & Entry
Entry to the old town core costs CNY 138 and is valid for 3 consecutive days. The ticket covers: the main riverside streets, the old city wall, the Former Residence of Shen Congwen (famous Chinese writer), and several minor museums and ancestral halls. Price verified November 2025.
You can walk the riverside paths and photograph the stilt houses from outside the ticketed zone for free. If you are only spending one night and primarily interested in the evening atmosphere and photos, you could skip the ticket — but you will miss the old town interior and all the historic buildings. We bought the ticket and found it worthwhile for the riverside sections of the old town, less so for the museums.
What to See & Do
The Stilt Houses (Diaojiaolou)
The iconic wooden houses built on stilts along the Tuo River are Fenghuang's defining image. The best views are from the Hong Bridge (Hongqiao) looking upstream, or from the opposite riverbank near the North Gate. At night, the houses are illuminated with warm lanterns — this is the shot that appears on every postcard. We photographed from the riverbank near the North Gate around 7 PM in November, just after the lights came on.
Early Morning Walk
Fenghuang transforms after 10 AM when day-trippers from tour buses arrive. Before 8 AM, the riverside is nearly empty — just locals washing vegetables in the river and the occasional photographer with a tripod. Walk the full length of the river from the Wind Bridge to the South Hua Gate. It takes about 45 minutes and is the best hour you will spend in Fenghuang.
Night River Cruise
Small wooden boats take visitors up and down the Tuo River after dark. The cruise costs CNY 80 per person and lasts about 20 minutes. It is touristy, but the view of the illuminated stilt houses from water level is genuinely magical. We did this at 8 PM in November and would do it again. Bring a jacket — it gets cold on the water even in mild weather.
Former Residence of Shen Congwen
Shen Congwen is Fenghuang's most famous son — a celebrated Chinese writer whose novel "Border Town" (边城) immortalized the region. His former residence is a modest courtyard house with personal artifacts and manuscripts. Worth 30 minutes if you have the ticket (it is included). Skip it if you are not interested in Chinese literature.
Where to Stay
Stay in a riverside guesthouse. This is non-negotiable — the whole point of Fenghuang is the river atmosphere, and a balcony overlooking the Tuo River at night is the experience you came for.
Riverside Guesthouses (Recommended)
CNY 200-500/night. Book one with a river-view balcony — ideally on the quieter upstream section (north of Hong Bridge). The downstream section near the bar street is louder at night. We stayed at a guesthouse near the North Gate (CNY 280, November 2025) with a balcony directly over the water. Worth every yuan.
Budget: Inland Guesthouses
CNY 80-150/night. Located in the alleys behind the riverside — a 2-5 minute walk to the water. Quieter than the riverside and significantly cheaper. A good option if you are on a tight budget and plan to spend your waking hours outside anyway.
Practical Tips
- • Go before 8 AM or stay overnight. Day-trippers arrive by 10 AM and the old town becomes shoulder-to-shoulder crowded. An overnight stay lets you experience Fenghuang's two best hours: sunrise and lantern-lit evening.
- • Bring cash. Smaller guesthouses and street food stalls may not accept foreign cards or international WeChat Pay.
- • Skip the bars. The bar street on the downstream riverbank plays loud music until midnight and feels like a college town. Not the Fenghuang experience you came for.
- • Pack light. The old town streets are cobblestone and narrow. Rolling luggage is miserable. A backpack is ideal.
- • Eat the ginger candy. Fenghuang's streetside ginger candy makers — pulling and stretching hot sugar — are a local specialty. It tastes better than it looks. Buy a small bag near the Hong Bridge.
Continuing Your Trip
Fenghuang is well-connected to other destinations beyond Zhangjiajie. From Fenghuang North Bus Station, you can take buses to:
Back to Zhangjiajie — Buses depart hourly, 3.5 hours, CNY 80. Last bus around 4 PM.
Guilin / Yangshuo — Via bus to Huaihua (1 hour, CNY 30) then high-speed train to Guilin (2 hours, CNY 150). A popular combo route: Zhangjiajie → Fenghuang → Guilin.
Changsha — Bus to Huaihua South station, then high-speed train to Changsha (1.5 hours, CNY 150). Total journey about 4 hours.
